How to Make Your Own Fire Extinguisher

Have you ever tried putting out a candle without blowing on it, or touching it with your hand?  Why not try making your own home made fire extinguisher?  Here is a simple experiment where you can make your own fire extinguisher using everyday house hold materials.

Materials:
A small plastic bottle with resealable cap
A candle
Matches
Spoon
Baking Soda
Hammer
Nail
Tissue Paper
Vinegar

Procedure:

1.  Ask an adult to help you light a candle.

2.  Ask an adult to help you make a small hole on the plastic bottle cap using the nail and hammer.
3.  Fill the bottle with about 1/3 full of vinegar.

4.  Cut a small piece of tissue paper and place about 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

5. Roll the tissue paper into a ball and carefully insert it into the plastic bottle.  Hang a small piece of tissue paper onto the mouth of the plastic bottle and cover tightly with the cap.

6.  Cover the hole on the cap with your finger and shake vigorously.  Aim at the lighted candle once you feel the pressure building up and fire away.

Note:
Baking soda and vinegar mix together and release carbon  dioxide.  Carbon Dioxide, which is heavier than air, goes out of the bottle and over the flame , preventing oxygen in the air from fueling the fire.
